By 1899 the music was being referred to as “vulgar, filthy and suggestive” by the press, but with its oddly syncopated polyrhythms and cakewalk beat, pianists in saloons, gambling houses and red light districts of American midwest cities became popular entertaining the clientel with this style of
music called variously at the time: “honky-tonk”, “jag-time”, “barrel-house” or “rag-time.”
Scott Joplin was one of those musicians who went on to become a household name as “king of the ragtime composers”. Other composers followed and soon gained wide acceptance with their ragtime pieces. Ragtime was revived in the 1970s, becoming particularly popular with the release of the motion picture The Sting and its subsequent sound track. Ragtime continues to be even more popular today than it ever was at the turn of the century.
