Australian Suite Op. 2 was written in Sydney, New South Wales, during the composer's trip to Australia in 1959-60. While visiting the famous Taronga Zoological Park and Aquarium he was deeply impressed by the colour, variety and originality of the Australian fauna. One of Sydney's most popular attractions for visitors, the beautifully landscaped Taronga Zoo houses native birds and animals in settings which closely resemble their natural environment.
The seven parts of the Australian Suite are musical impressions of the following representatives of Australian wildlife: The Kangaroo, the Black Swan, The Platypus, The Koala, The Kookaburra, The Lyre Bird and the Emu.
